We don't fool around with Merlot. We went straight to Larry Hyde and set-up an "acreage contract" for a block that features the "3 Palms" selection from up valley. We used our gentle Pinot noir treatment (de-stemming without crushing and open-top fermentation) to coax out the expression of this unique site of beautiful red clay. 204 cases produced, available only at the winery.

The Carneros area is planted overwhelmingly with Chardonnay and Pinot noir, at 46% and 44% of the total acreage, respectively. And this is not without good reason as the climate is ideal for these two grape varieties. However, Carneros is a special, if not magical, place for Merlot. A place where the grapes can hang deep into October, developing additional layers of ripeness without losing the freshness and acidity that keeps wine moving on the palate.
We picked our 1.25 acres on October 9. After fermentation we aged the eight barrels (50% new) for 22 months prior to unfiltered bottling.
Exotic dark fruits predominate on the nose with blackberry and boysenberry along with layers of spice including fresh ground nutmeg and brown sugar. The palate features beautiful fruit sweetness, with notes of leather, blackberry compote and black tea. There is plenty of horsepower here, so additional time in your cellar will lead to pleasing results.
