There's something magical about exploring wine country from the back of a horse—the slower pace, the connection to the landscape, the timeless elegance of it all. We're thrilled to introduce you to Sonoma Valley Trail Rides and its inspiring founder.

A Legacy Rooted in Sonoma

Michelle Rogers' story begins on a small farm in Carneros, just outside the Sonoma city limits. "I grew up on a farm," Michelle recalls. "My mother, a single young woman with two daughters, managed to buy a farm, raise animals, and gift me my first horse."

That first horse sparked a lifelong passion. Her mother's remarkable journey—building a successful career as a lawyer, then a judge, and now a doctor—instilled in Michelle the strength to pursue her own dreams. "Her passion for hard work and becoming successful gave me the strength to pursue my own dreams," she reflects.

Those dreams took Michelle across the country for over 35 years, managing professional horse barns, competing in the show ring, and training and breeding horses. But her connection to animals went beyond horses. With a deep love for animal welfare, Michelle spent 13 years as Sergeant for Animal Services at a Marin County shelter, working as an animal cruelty investigator.

"I eventually became fatigued with the trauma and drama surrounding this line of work," Michelle admits. "I eventually went back to my horse knowledge and developed a plan on how to share them with my community."

Returning to her hometown as a single mother with a daughter of her own, Michelle came full circle. "My love for Sonoma Valley and horses conceptualized a 'ride and wine' idea," she explains. After successfully developing a trail riding program for a Napa winery, Michelle branched out independently, opening Sonoma Valley Trail Rides in 2018.

Today, Michelle leads a team of professional horse wranglers and wine specialists who share her passion for creating unforgettable experiences in Sonoma Valley.

Meet the Herd

Today, thirteen horses call Sonoma Valley Trail Rides home, each with their own story and personality. Marcel, the eldest at nearly 28, has been with the family since he was just six months old—a 27-year partnership built on trust and countless adventures together. Now retired and "very spoiled," he enjoys his well-earned rest.

The herd is as diverse as the guests they carry. Some came from Montana, others from Texas and Missouri. Several are rescue horses, carefully rehabilitated and given a second chance at purpose and connection.

Despite their varied backgrounds, these horses share one essential trait: they're kind, gentle, and genuinely eager to meet new people. For many guests—those who've never been on a horse or perhaps rode once as a child—Michelle's horses are patient guides. "My horses are patient and safe, providing positive happy memories," she says. "I feel so proud of my horses when they carry people that may be nervous to ride, watching their confidence grow, their smiles and laughter erupting. It is truly amazing to see people connect to the horse."

More Than a Trail Ride

Michelle has witnessed countless memorable experiences over the years. "The horseback proposals are always so touching and sweet, I cry every time," she admits.

But some of the most meaningful rides involve guests with disabilities. "Many of our guests have had challenging disabilities, missing limbs, vision and sight impaired, and more. We take great pride in accommodating any person's special needs to ensure they can have a safe and wonderful experience."

For Michelle, every ride is an opportunity to create something special. "Whether you want to fulfill a bucket list, celebrate a joyous occasion with friends and family, or connect with your childhood love of horses, we love sharing these moments through horses," she says. "Most of all we want people to feel happy, appreciated and excited to come back!"

Beyond the Trail

When she's not leading rides through Sonoma Valley, Michelle enjoys exploring her hometown. "I enjoy hiking Jack London Park, exploring the reservoir with my dogs, picnics in the town square and lots of family time!" she shares.

This deep connection to Sonoma shines through in every ride. Michelle and her team don't just guide you through beautiful landscapes—they share the valley's rich history of wine, grape growing, and the stories that shaped this remarkable region.
